52 years since the discovery of Varna golden treasure from 5th millenium B.C.

On the 22nd of October 1972, during building works in Varna's industrial zone, a local 22-year-old excavator Raicho Marinov found several golden objects. Soon after this accidental discovery, Bulgarian archaeologists went to the site and discovered a whole necropolis with more than 300 graves.

During the continued archaeological works, more than 6.5 kg of golden objects were found in total.

Following the completion of the age analysis, it was revealed that the golden artifacts originate from the 5th Millennium B.C., establishing Varna's treasure as the oldest gold pieces in the world.

Currently, the Chalcolithic gold from Varna is on display at the Archeological museum located in the city center.
